  • Utilities: Research providers or transfer utilities for gas, water, electric, and internet providers.
  • Insurance: Make sure that you have the correct coverage for your home and personal belongings. Homeowners insurance covers a lot of things. Contact your insurance agent
  • Thermostat: Install a programmable smart thermostat to save money for your utility bills
  • Outlets: Install outlet covers if you have small children in the house
  • Main Breaker: Locate and label your main circuit breaker and water main entering the house
  • Trash Collection Day: Ask a neighbor or call the city to find your garbage collection day
  • A/C & Heating Vents: Keep areas in front of vents clear so air can flow freely at all time
  • Fireplace: If your home has a fireplace, clear and clean the chimney before use
  • Locks: Replace or rekey all exterior door locks to ensure security, and change codes for garage doors
  • Security: Set up your home security system, research companies before signing up a new contract

 

 

Personal Items
  • Change of Address: File a change of address with USPS and IRS
  • Bank Information: Change your bank’s billing address and credit cards
  • Driver License: Update your driver license, vehicle registration and voter card
  • Homestead Exemption: File with your county before the beginning of the following year, usually (January-March, check with your county) after the purchase of your home. The homestead exemption is a discount on your property taxes for occupying the home as principal residency. It’s a very simple process and you can do it online, just make sure that your vehicle registration has been transferred over to the new address as well as part of the process for being approved. It does not apply to investors.
  • School: Register your kids in the new school district, school may ask you for proof of residency from the new house.
  • Neighbors: Take some time to meet your neighbors and exchange contact information for emergencies
